Jawhar is one of the tribal blocks in the newly created 36thdistrict of Maharashtra - Palghar district. The block covers a very large administrative area of 50 Gram Panchayats with 107 revenue villages and 261 hamlets,characterized by steep, undulating and inaccessible terrain. Jawhar is predominantly inhabited by tribal and 71% of them fall under below poverty line. The literacy rate is very low 57.4%, compared to the state average of 82.3%.

About the Project Selected Village’s Background

  • The native tribal communities of these hamlets are Thakur.
  • These villages having inadequate sources of safe drinking water are regarding health issues.
  • The same issues on literacy in male and mainly in females.
  • Most of the villagers are small and marginal farmers with an average of 1-5 acres of landholding per farmer.
  • They are engaged in seasonal farming for subsistence and migrate for earning wages in nearby towns and cities for nearly six months.
  • Rice, millets, pigeon pea and black gram are the main crops cultivated. Vegetables are cultivated in kitchen gardens during Monsoon for domestic consumption only.
  • Incomes from agriculture and wages are meagre.

Key Activities:- Community Welfare

  1. Quality of Life – to provide safe drinking water, nutritional supports in health initiatives,women empowerments including quality education.
  2. Promotion to Livelihoods - Farm-base interventions related to productivity improvements and water resource developments, diversifications in farming introductions of tree base farming, floriculture and Commercial vegetable cultivations.
  3. Strengthening’s of collectives.
  4. Technical supports through famers trainings and demonstrations.

About The Implementing Agency BISLD

  • In last twenty-five years, BAIF Institute of Sustainable Livelihoods and Development (BISLD) in partnership with Government departments such as ITDP, MSRLM, NABARD and different CSR’s have been working on sustainable livelihoods in the Block.
  • The main focus is livelihood promotion to the tribal families through tree based farming, floriculture, vegetable cultivation and water resource development.
  • BAIF is also working as resource support organisation in agricultural and allied activities.
  • Under these various partnerships, BAIF introduced sustainable livelihood models through productivity enhancement and increase in production by introducing crop diversity, introduction of cash crops.

Project Holistic Development’s Interventions are designed to support the Tribal Community for Welfare Activities

  • A. Community welfare activities

  • B. Promoting livelihoods through alternative income by on-farm livelihood activities, which includes:

The Project Holistic developments programme’s aims to community welfare activities and improving the quality of life, enhance the income of farmers through capacity building, establishment of farmer collectives, and productivity enhancement.

Approach

The village level primary information was collected through Focused Group Discussions and Baseline Survey conducted by BAIF in the villages with the help of youths, farmers, older farmers, and women/SHG members. The relevant information such as information of existing resources, resource management,and opportunities in creating sources etc. were collected from secondary data.

Adopted Methods

BISLD adopted the methodology to focus on villagers, women’s as the tools of transformation in its project areas. To make inroads and gain trust of the people, BISLD staffs continuously interacted, oriented the key persons and senior community members in the villages and Gram-panchayat, and share with them the technical information regarding various interventions of the project.

Meetings cum orientations were organized to introduce project activities in village meetings and women members through SHG meetings. These meetings were used as the platform to discuss about the interventions, their benefits, and also share the experiences in other villages. Special focus was given on its implementation methodologies, its benefits and how these can altogether bring a change in the lives of the people.

Follow up meetings were organized to meet the individuals and organized common meetings.

Exposure visits were arranged for the farmers to meet progressive farmers and well managed plots in the nearby village Dengachimet from Jawhar block. These exposure visits were eyeopening experiences for them, which further encouraged their knowledge and confidence.

Camps were organized for the general health check-ups for the creating awareness and willing to gather for the community and individual levels benefits from the projects.

Community Health

Smokeless Chullha

For efficient cooking and to minimize use of fire wood/timber a smokeless chullha were introduced. This chulha use of charcoal for the burning and very low smoke generate during the use. It reduces the effort of women to collect timber as it requires less fire wood.

Maximum diseases occurs due to contaminated water and unhygienic condition. Poor health due to lack of nutrition in diet.

Water borne diseases: cold and Cough, diarrhea, temperature, abdominal pain, etc.

Women Empowerment

  • A strong emphasis is being taken to organize women through the formation of Self Help Groups, so the both village have 07 SHGs (two in Sambarpada and 5 in Kastipada) having 76 women.
  • Following step were taken during repporting period.
  • Attended monthly meetings of SHGs Arranged a combine meeting with UMED (State Rural Livelihood Mission) for the strengthening and capacity buildings of SHGs.

Livelihoods

  • Floriculture (Flower Farming–Jasmine Cultivation)
    • FLORICULTURE, has emerged as an alternative source of livelihood for small and marginal farmers in many parts of the country.

    • Technical Training and Package of Practices for Jasmine cultivation

    • Traditionally, Jasmine was not grown in Jawhar taluka. This was introduced by BAIF due to its sturdy nature, short gestation period to flowering.
    • Provision of appropriate technical inputs and sustained institutional support
    • Small amount of Investment in technical and institutional support generates sustained monthly incomes of Rs. 5,000 – 6,000/-.

Water Resource Development

  • Three groups are formed during reporting period and 26 farmers benefited.
  • The drinking water schemes from Kashtipada also benefited to six farmers for irrigations to their farm and having two groups formed.
  • Solar based water lifting scheme (03 HP) for the irrigation purpose installed at Sambarpada village and benefited 20 farmers.
